THE DAILY POST

Welcome to The Daily Post! As the name suggests, this portion of the website is updated daily (right after school) and is designed for you to be able to access what was covered in class, from home. It's a great resource for last minute updates or if you are ever absent or find yourself confused about any specifics about homework, reading, due dates, vocab, etc.

Just consider it one more thing I do to make your life a bit easier...


Wednesday 3/31

LA 10 Honors
-Discussed yesterday's registration...chatted a bit about the high school experience, college, and how to get in to one.
-Read act II of Earnest (click here if your class still needs to finish reading)...be prepared for a CD check.

HW:
-Finish Act II of Earnest
-LOTF essays due Friday (+ turnitin.com)



Creative Writing

-Journals (none)
-Handed back stamped Hollow Man pieces from yesterday (these will be turned in with your character portfolio from the week)
-Went to the lab and began working a new piece--taking your character and another from Monday's bullets and have them interact by placing them together on a plane to Sacramento...worked the entire period in the lab.

HW:
-Fruitjournal check for tomorrow (8-9 entries)
-Finish up your Sacramento piece for tomorrow...make sure you have a copy to share

Tuesday 3/30

LA 10 Honors
-Worked with the counselors on registration for the entire period. Went over class options, requirements, etc.
-Follow-up registration will happen on Friday, make sure you have all of your materials/info ready to go (if you were gone, swing by the counseling office to get your materials)

HW:
-LOTF essays due Friday by 3pm (don't forget about turnitin.com)
-Registration materials need to be ready by Friday



Creative Writing

-Journals: none
-Continued working with characters from this week. Began a new piece entitled: The Hollow Man (click here). Worked on this for the entire period...turned in at the end. These will be handed back (once they've been stamped) and turned in with the rest of your character work we've been focusing on.

HW:
-Fruitjournal update by Thursday (8-9 entries minimum)

Monday 3/29

LA 10 Honors
-Quickly discussed tomorrow's registration + plan for the week (finish Earnest by Thurs, Essays now due Friday)
-Finished reading Act I of Earnest (5th-6th period needs to finish this up by Wed)

HW:
-Essays due Friday by 3pm (don't forget turnitin.com)


Creative Writing
-Journals" "How do you think it works?..."
-Due: Character sketch from Friday (stamped these...explained that all character work (bullets/notes/sketches/in-class writes) needs to be compiled and turned in later this week...make sure you are keeping track of it)
-Began working on a scenario with your characters (stuck in traffic, I-90, Oldsmobile, 97 degrees, etc)...worked on these for the whole period

HW:
-Finish your traffic write (if you didn't)
-Be prepared to work independently tomorrow...there's a handout that explains everything on the front table

Friday 3/26

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Background info/research on Wilde/Victorian Culture/Satire...discussed this in class
-Assigned roles and began reading Act 1 of Earnest...got about 10-15 pages in (just before the introduction of Bunbury and Bunburying)

-Work on Essays...finals due Wed by 3pm

-Discussed yesterday's work with the Naga Students
-Checked-in on Fruit Journals...looked at a few online

-Out of your 10ish character notes/bullets from today and Wed, choose one and write up another character sketch for Monday (click for the sample). Due Monday at the start of class.

Thursday 3/25

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Reverse Outline from yesterday. Discussed these in class. Discussed essay progress.
-Went over some sample chunks from Eyes essays. Worked in small groups to analyze, break-down, edit, and stream-line. Discussed the difference between sloppy chunks and focused, deliberate writing
-Assigned the Importance of Being Earnest Research Starters (click here for a copy)

HW:
-Finish Earnest Research for tomorrow
-Essays due Wed by 3pm (don't forget turnitin.com)


Creative Writing
-No Journals today
-Spent the class today interacting with the exchange students from Naga, Japan. Went to the auditorium, did some writing + sharing exercises on culture, stereotypes, etc.

HW:
-Keep your fruit journals up-to-date

Wednesday 3/24

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Typed/Printed Rough Draft of Flies Essay
-Finished watching LOTF. Discussed the film, the director's choices, etc.
-Discussed drafts--answered some quick questions regarding organization, etc.
-Handed out + explained the reverse outline. Got started in class (if there was time)

HW:
-Reverse outline due tomorrow. Remember, quick answers (as long as they are thoughtful) are fine for this.



Creative Writing
-Journals: "Love is not what I am looking for right now, sorry."
-Due: Character sketches from last night. Stapled these together with character bullets (all of 'em) and the picture. Did some sharing of these.
-Began a list of potential character names
-Continued character/bullets/notes...but this time without pictures (occupation, age, sex only)...got through about 5. We'll do more on Friday

HW:
-Fruit Journal check is happening tomorrow morning. You should have 6+ entries by now.
-We'll be with the Naga exchange students tomorrow...be prepared to interact, write, etc.

Tuesday 3/23

LA 10 Honors
-Due: LOTF symbolism projects
-Quickly checked in on tomorrow's rough drafts (these are due at the start of the class. Typed. Printed. Ready to go.)
-Continued watching LOTF.

-Complete Rough Drafts due tomorrow

Creative Writing
-Journals: "Assemblies"
-Continued working with character bullets/notes from yesterday. Wrote on a total of 4 portraits. Did some sharing.
-Introduced the next step--a character sketch (click for sample). Read the sample and discussed. Your job is to pick 1 of your characters and extend your notes into a 1-2 page character sketch.

HW:
-Original character sketch due tomorrow at the start of class (stapled with the picture and all of your notes for all 4 characters)

Monday 3/22

-Took Vocab/Lit Quiz #21
-Went over lit quiz answers...discussed the tricky ones
-Checked in on essays and projects
-Began watching Lord of the Flies (Brook's version)

-Journals: a situation where 2 people interact without speaking each other's language
-Discussed our plan for our Japanese visit (write about images of Japan, compare notes.)
-Outside reading brainstorm (these will help me form lists for each of you)
-Began character bullets/notes on various portraits (got through 2 swaps...1-2 more tomorrow)

-Discussed the HSPE
-Discussed the end of the novel (the officer, the death of Piggy, Rodger, the pig skull, Ralph, etc.)
-Handed out the close reading on the death of Piggy

-Start working on the symbolism project + essay
-Study Vocab--however for the sake of time and our need to finish discussing the novel, there will be no vocab quiz tomorrow. It will most likely be moved to Monday.
-Finish your close reading (notes, commentary, ideas...be detailed, I want to see evidence of your analysis for the start of class tomorrow)

-Discussed chapters 7-8 (Simon, The Lord of the Flies, the killing of the sow, the separation of tribes, the Beast)
-Went through a close-reading of the Killing of the Sow. Discussed the greater implications of the imagery and language...how it all connects to the pig's head/Lord of the Flies...worked on this as a class.

HW:
-Read chapters 9-10
-Study Vocab
-Finish up today's close reading (pick out key images, word choices, phrasing, imagery, etc....circle, underline, respond to what matters).


Creative Writing

-Journals: "Ray Charles" write in the lab...
-Due: Place Remix #2 (checked these off for points)
-Began working on the Place Reprise (choosing one of your Remixes and writing the exact opposite). Spent the whole time in the lab working on these.

HW:
-Open letter now due Thursday (note the change! You've got an Extra Day)

Friday 3/12

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Practice HSPE reading exam
-Swapped and went over the answers for the practice reading packet. Discussed each question and scored these in class. Discussed test-techniques for next week's HSPE
-Reminded everyone about their reading for the weekend.

-Read chapters 7-8 for Monday
-Vocab/Lit quiz next Friday...study

Wednesday 3/10

LA 10 Honors
-Went through a quick HSPE brainstorm: proposed school funding cuts on extra-curricular activities. Discussed approaches to this prompt as a class.
-Discussed basic human needs--tied in to discussion of LOTF
-Discussed chapter 4 (painted faces, the killing of the pig, the criticism the book sometimes receives on its views on tribal communities as savages, etc.)

HW:
-Read chapters 5-6 for tomorrow



Creative Writing

-Journals: Man standing in the middle of a busy intersection
-Discussed Place Assignments. Went over rubric. Due tomorrow!
-Checked in on Fruitjournals (update due tomorrow!)
-Went through 2 exercises in specificity...picked specific aspects of Place Assignments and spent 10ish minutes focusing on just that one thing...did some sharing

HW:
-Place Assignments due tomorrow by 3pm (no excuses!)

Tuesday 3/9

LA 10 Honors
-Handed back practice HSPE exams. Discussed the results as well as a few things to keep in mind for next week's actual test. Spent some time discussing this as a class
-Due: Close readings on:"authority" and "leadership." Stamped these and went over the answers as a class. Discussed. Turned-in (both) at the end of the period.
-Discussed chapter 3 (tension, hunting, Simon)

-Discussed chapters 1-2 (first in small groups, then together as a class)
-Created a symbolism organizer that can be used throughout our study of the novel (quotes, pages numbers, CM on what the symbol represents)...your job to keep it up-to-date
-Went through a close reading passage together (on the "toy of voting"). Discussed as a class. Handed out the second passage to be done tonight (if gone, you'll need to get this tomorrow).

HW:
-Read chapter 3
-Finish your 2nd close reading handout( "on authority")



Creative Writing
-Journal starter: "spoiled"
-Due: typed, printed, as-complete-as-possible draft of your place assignment
-Went through an in-class editing exercise/demo (used: PG's "Driving on Rims"). Discussed the editing process together as a class.
-Swapped drafts with a partner (voluntary or random).

-Need to edit your partner's draft for tomorrow...we will be in the lab (make sure you have an e-copy of your draft to work on)

Friday 3/5

-Read chapter 2 of LOTF. Be prepared for a big, big discussion of what you've read thus far for Monday. Have quotes, have ideas, have questions to share.

-Checked in on Place Assignments and Fruit Journals (make sure you are hard at work on both!)
-Went through a drop-in writing activity (spent the period working on a story that began with: he could hear it approaching for miles...then went on to include: broken glass, olives, haziness, train travel, Caracas, a dead bird, a gold tooth, and someone screaming underwater)
-Shared and swapped these at the end of the period

HW:
-Typed, printed, as-complete-as-possible draft of your Place Assignment is due at the start of class on Monday

Thursday 3/4

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Eyes Were Watching God, critical paragraph on film
-Quick intro to Lord of the Flies.
-Goldhammer left class for approx. 25min. Students were responsible for handling a "Plane Crash Scenario" on their own.
-Reconvened as a whole group, discussed the experience and it's lack of authority, rules, instruction, etc + how they went for the group.
