THE DAILY POST

Welcome to The Daily Post! As the name suggests, this portion of the website is updated daily (right after school) and is designed for you to be able to access what was covered in class, from home. It's a great resource for last minute updates or if you are ever absent or find yourself confused about any specifics about homework, reading, due dates, vocab, etc.

Just consider it one more thing I do to make your life a bit easier...


Friday 1/29

LA 10 Honors
-Took vocab quiz #17
-Went over lit terms
-Added the first round of lit-terms-only to the vocab list

HW:
-Make sure you read this background info on Hurston and Their Eyes Were Watching God
-No need to have updated vocab for Monday. We are officially done with the weekly check-off for this semester



Creative Writing
-Handed out Floodplain #14
-Finished up the final readings
-Read Conan O'Brien's commencement speech
-Said our goodbyes and wrapped up the semester

-None! It's over...unless you have yet to chat with me about your outside reading book. Aim for Monday or Tuesday. It will be too late if you do it later than that.

Thursday 1/28

LA 10 Honors
-Revisited yesterday's discussion of Antigone/MLK essays and the AP rubric.
-Took a look at a couple of samples as a class (discussed strengths/weaknesses/scores)
-Broke into small groups and worked through reading, discussing, scoring 4-5 essays
-Came back together as a class at the end and discussed strengths/weaknesses

HW:
-Vocab quiz tomorrow (study!)
-Read this background information on Zora Neale Hurston and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Monday



Creative Writing
-Jumped right back into final readings...got through most, only 4-5 left to go tomorrow.
-Had time for a few outside reading discussions at the end.

Wednesday 1/27

LA 10 Honors
-Handed back Caesar Essays.
-Read this letter to the class on observations made from this last round of essays
-Discussed this week's MLK/Antigone essay. Brainstormed approaches as a class. Took a look at the AP rubric and discussed how it specifically lines up with this particular essay

-Vocab for Friday
-We'll be starting Their Eyes Were Watching God by the end of the week. If you have a copy, start bringing it. If not, we'll check 'em out either tomorrow or Friday

-Decided on the Floodplain cover
-Jumped right into student readings

Tuesday 1/26

LA 10 Honors
-Spent the whole period finishing up Antigone and MLK essays. Turned these in at the end of the period.

-Due: Final draft of original piece
-Discussed Floodplain. It will be done on Friday. Covers need to happen.
-Began final readings...got through 5ish.

Monday 1/25

LA 10h update! In an effort to provide a little relief for everyone (myself included), you will have the FULL period to finish up your Antigone/MLK essays. Rest easy, young scholars...rest easy.

LA 10 Honors

-Due: Vocab #17
-Came right in and began working on the Antigone/MLK in-class essay. Spent the whole period working.
-Tomorrow, there will be at least half the period to finish this up. We'll adjust the time accordingly as needed

Creative Writing
-Final journal write of the year...used it as a farewell
-Due: Draft of Original Piece (checked this off for points)...did a little peer-editing
-Went over the plan for the next few days (readings begin tomorrow, Floodplain is in the process of being assembled, etc.)
-Handed back a number of old assignments

-Outside reading chats need to be finished up by the end of the week
-Final readings begin tomorrow (bring a copy of your draft! be prepared)
-Floodplain email and cover! Needs to be ready for tommorrow

-Took Vocab Lit/Quiz #16
-Went over lit terms
-Reminded everyone to review the letter regarding in class essays (click here) and to not forget to read MLK's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" (click here). We also briefly discussed civil disobedience.

HW:
-Read MLK's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," be prepared to work with the connections you have made between the letter and Antigone regarding Civil Disobedience.
-Don't forget to read this. It will help you for Monday.

-Created a list of "things worth standing up for", prioritized, explained, and then opened it up to a class discussion. Made connections between these issues and what Antigone is standing up for.

Monday 1/11

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Vocab Work #15
-Discussed last weeks reading. Reviewed the info from the Prologos.
-Jumped right into reading. Read: Parados, Episode 1, Ode 1.
-Discussed the play...gave away the big spoiler: Oedipus is the murderer and the son. Went back to what we've read and picked out the moments of dramatic irony. Introduced the concept of motif (dark/light/disease/blindness).

HW:
-Study Vocab
-Print your copy of play if you want to take notes as we read.



Creative Writing

-Journals: Song Lyrics
-Introduced the Lit Riff assignment (pick a song, tell a story based on it or a moment from it). Read some Tom Perlotta's "Dirty Mouth."
-Went back to our list of songs (created over the weekend...or at the start of class) and began brainstorming possible plot outlines.

-Be prepared to begin your lit riff tomorrow in the lab. Have your song + plan all figured out.

LA 10 Honors
-Quick recap of yesterday's Greek drama notes.
-Continued notes from yesterday. Discussed the chorus, Greek masks, tragic heroes (click here). Watched this quick mini-documentary on the history of the theater.
-Began reading the play. Finished reading the prologos. If you are in a class that didn't finish, be sure to do so (runs 'til page 13)

HW:
-Vocab and Lit quiz tomorrow....it's been a while. Study.


Creative Writing
-Journals: song write. Medeski, Martin, and Wood's Bubblehouse
-Due: "List Narratives" from yesterday. Shared a bunch of these in class.
-Introduced the idea of 6-word stories. Looked at the original Hemmingway piece. Looked at a few others. Began working on these in class.

-10 original 6word stories due at the start of class tomorrow

Wednesday 1/6

LA 10 Honors
-Discussed yesterday's in-class essay. Did a little sharing regarding what people came up with, how it was approached, themes, connections, etc.
-Began intro notes to Greek Theater. Discussed: ancient Greece, Sophocles, the theater of Dionysus, and the Greek unities...we will continue with the notes tomorrow. If you'd like to get a bit more info, click here for a 10min youtube clip on the history of Greek theater

Creative Writing

-Journals: Mimes.
-Due: "Girl/Boy" mimic from yesterday...broke into small groups and did some sharing before opening these up to the whole class. Discussed the process and what folks came up with.
-Read: "Mixtape: Love and Other Catastrophes" Discussed the style and the concept of telling a personal narrative in list form. Tried to approach this abstract task in class. Spent about 15min seeing what we could come up with...we'll review the results tomorrow in class.

Tuesday 1/5

LA 10 Honors
-Due: 1-pager from yesterday
-Came right in and began working on in-class essay on connecting your outside reading book to another text on a thematic level.
-Spent the whole period finishing up the essay...we'll discuss how it went tomorrow

-If you've got copies of any novels to be turned in (ASP, All Quiet, even your outside reading choice), be sure to bring them in tomorrow

-Journals: Resolutions
-Due: He Said mimic from yesterday. Shared some of these in class. Did a quick "movie version" using this same style. Discussed the process and how saying more with less can often lead to some interesting results.
-Read Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl" and Jim Heymen's response, "Boy." Discussed the style and approach. Began working on a personal mimic for your own piece.

Monday 1/4

LA 10 Honors
-CD check on outside reading (minor character)
-Quick discuss of outside reading
-Assigned tonight's 1-pager: One sheet of paper to creatively portray what the theme of your novel is...images, symbols, quotes/CDs, even CM can work for this. Be creative. No rules...just make sure you stick to 1 page and really get to the heart of your novel's themes.
-Reviewed where we were at before break.
-Revisited the Separate Peace AP-Style essay. Looked at the rubric. Broke into groups and did some scoring of some actual anonymous essays. Discussed patterns, strengths, weaknesses.

HW:
-1-pager due at the start of class tomorrow
-You absolutely need your book for what you will be doing tomorrow in class (hint).
-Vocab quiz on Friday...make sure you are up-to-date



Creative Writing

-Journals: "Decade"
-Read: The 12 days of Christmas
-Discussed outside reading progress. Did a little sharing of what folks are reading
-Went over the plan for the next few weeks (a couple of new assignments, another Floodplain, final Open Letter, final readings). More info to come.
-Started thinking about style. Discussed personal style a bit and the idea of "borrowing" another author's approach.
-Made a list of 10 "big personal moments"
-Read "He Noticed" Discussed the simplistic, stripped down style
-Mimicked the "He Noticed" style and applied it to one of your original 10 big moments. Worked on this in class until the end of the period.
