THE DAILY POST

Welcome to The Daily Post! As the name suggests, this portion of the website is updated daily (right after school) and is designed for you to be able to access what was covered in class, from home. It's a great resource for last minute updates or if you are ever absent or find yourself confused about any specifics about homework, reading, due dates, vocab, etc.

Just consider it one more thing I do to make your life a bit easier...


Monday 11/30

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Fully shaped essay
-Due: Vocab work #12
-Discussed essay progress. Reminded everyone about the need for a complete draft tomorrow. Addressed some issues folks were having (lead-ins, conclusions, argumentative topic sentences)
-Went through a comma review (click here for the handout). Click here for the packet that's due tomorrow

-Complete, typed, printed, edited draft due tomorrow at the start of class



Creative Writing
-Journals: "awkward family gatherings"...must include dialogue
-Checked in the on the eavesdropping/stolen dialogue assignment for tomorrow
-Discussed dialogue: what makes it good, the rules, etc. Read a few samples of powerful dialogue.

HW:
-Stolen dialogue needs to be ready to go at the start of class tomorrow (copy a down a 4-5 min conversation you eavesdrop on...don't get caught)
-Floodplain email!...do it!

Wednesday 11/25

Due to parent conferences, only periods 4-6 met today.

Creative Writing
-Journals: "List of things not thankful for"
-Reminded everyone about Floodplain emails
-Assigned the stolen dialogue assignment (over the long weekend, eavesdrop on a conversation, aim for about 5min, write down as much of it as you can, don't worry about filling in the blanks, don't get caught!)
-Read some 20min stories

LA 10 Honors
-Due: complete "pre-write" for Julius Caesar essays (outline, web, etc.). Discussed and checked these off for points.
-Read: "Brutus and I" (it's funny)

-No journals today...continued working in the lab on the current object-->character piece we began on Tuesday.
-If finished, turned these in at the end of the period. Those still working, get them to me at the start of class.

Wednesday 11/18

LA 10 Honors
-Followed-up on yesterday's essay handback...checked to see if there were any clarifying questions that could be answered.
-Read all of Act 5. Finished the play. Discussed the end.

-Memorizations due by Monday at the end of the day



Creative Writing
-No journal today...went straight to the lab
-Due: Open Letter #3
-Began working the object->character write. Did a little sharing and check in at the end of the period.

Tuesday 11/17

LA 10 Honors
-Handed back All Quiet essays. Read letter to the class and discussed general observations. For the key to the numbered comments, click here.
-Finished reading Act 4...we should hopefully finish up the play tomorrow

-Began the object-->character write. Everyone selected a found object to base a short character piece on. Brainstormed in class. We'll be in the lab to start working on these tomorrow.

Monday 11/16

-Due: Final versions of fruit journals
-Reminded everyone about the need to get Floodplain submissions emailed
-Handed back a number of assignments
-Did an extended drop-in write. (started with " __________ could taste it in the air" and proceeded to add: velvety, glimmer, halogen, Iceland, bleeding knuckles, teeth, an empty stadium, horizontal, a woman in all white clothes, defeated, and then ended with fire/flames). Did some sharing of these at the end of the period.

-Final drafts of picture/partner piece is due tomorrow at the end of class (need to have picture stapled)

Thursday 11/12

*Sub Day (if you are checking this on Wednesday night, be sure to help the sub out tomorrow. The post below is thus written as a plan for the day). Goldhammer will be back tomorrow.

LA 10 Honors
-Today is simple: the idea is to get caught up with the Brando version of Julius Caesar. The DVD needs to be queued to where the class last stopped watching.
-Watch from the end of Act 2 through the end of Act 3. Basically, that's the death of Caesar through Antony's speech. DO NOT watch any further.
-If the film finishes early, you can work on your memorizations, your acts 4-5 chunks, or study for your Vocab/Lit quiz tomorrow.

-The sub will give everyone a copy of a handout entitled "Rewriting the Boring." There are clear instructions at the top of the page. Follow them. -Introduced some ideas regarding rhetoric/logos/pathos/ethos (click here for the official handout). Used these terms to help analyze Antony and Brutus' speeches. Broke into groups (each group assigned a speech) and spent the class period breaking down each speech (idea by idea) and figuring out the approach and method each of them takes (filled in the margins with notes, etc.)
-Assigned tonight's 2-chunk paragraph (click here for the prompt)
