THE DAILY POST

Welcome to The Daily Post! As the name suggests, this portion of the website is updated daily (right after school) and is designed for you to be able to access what was covered in class, from home. It's a great resource for last minute updates or if you are ever absent or find yourself confused about any specifics about homework, reading, due dates, vocab, etc.

Just consider it one more thing I do to make your life a bit easier...


Friday 2/29

LA 10 Honors

LA 9

-Due: Thesis statements for persuasive "rule" essay
-Began webbing essay (if gone, you can download a blank web from the writing center of this site)
-Discussed the fact that it would be a good idea to begin actually writing this essay, as next week you will be very busy with your Odyssey project

-Odyssey project is due on Tuesday
-Completed webbing for persuasive essay is due on Monday...we will be in the lab during class. Be sure to bring what you need to continue working on your essay

Thursday 2/28

LA 10 Honors
-Finished up essay webbing for persuasive WASL practice
-Went over anchor papers as a class and discussed the WASL rubric

-Vocab quiz tomorrow...make sure you study all of your words!



Creative Writing
-Journal Starter: "focus"
-Finished up peer editing
-Spent some time elaborating on a specific section of the place assignment

-Quick check-in on Odyssey projects
-Went through released WASL essays and how they were scored by the official WASL scorers
-Handed out new WASL prompt (need to come to class with a solid thesis statement)

-Decide upon "rule to change" for WASL prompt and come to class with a solid thesis statement

Wednesday 2/27

LA 10 Honors
-Discussed WASL style writing (expository vs. persuasive). Went over the scoring rubric for the WASL
-Handed out an official WASL prompt and got into small groups to begin "webbing/mapping" this essay (this is as far as we are going with this prompt...just the prewriting, we will finish it up tomorrow)

HW:
-Study your Vocab for Friday's quiz



Creative Writing
-Journal opener: "It started as just a game..."
-Did some qucik sharing from journals
-Due: Initial Draft of place assignment
-Broke into pairs and went through a peer editing assignment (if gone, we can get you caught up tomorrow)

HW:
-Make some additional revisions to your place assignment + any changes that come to you tonight. Bring an updated draft to class tomorrow. Tomorrow we will finish up editing, take a look at any changes that you may have made, and possibly take some time to do a bit of writing. Be sure to bring an electronic copy (disk, email, etc) so if we make it to the lab you have access to your work



LA 9
-Broke back into groups and finished up essay webbing from yesterday
-Came back to a large group and discussed the prompt and possible approaches to the essay
-Handed out the official WASL scoring rubric and quickly discussed its specifics

Tuesday 2/26

-Quickly discussed Place Assignment and went over the rubric for scoring
-Covered what needs to happen for tomorrow's draft (typed, printed, as complete as possible...if these things can't happen, get as close as you can. Be prepared to shared,swap, and edit)
-Spent 25minutes working on place assignments in class

-Due: AF essay rewrite (stapled to original draft, spent a few minutes in class identifying the new changes...if you were absent, be sure to bring in original draft a.s.a.p.)
-Introduced the next 1-2 weeks of WASL prep (discussed the differences between Expository, Persuasive, and Literary Anaylsis)
-Got into small groups and began webbing a former WASL prompt (if gone, we will continue with this tomorrow)

-Odyssey project due in 1 week (Tuesday 3/4)

Monday 2/25

LA 10 Honors
-Discussed LOTF symbolism projects+paragraphs. These are due tomorrow by 2:45. Be sure that you review the requirements of this project and that your final product goes above and beyond. Make it stand out. Make it memorable. Click here for a copy of the original handout.
-Began working on some practice WASL work. Went through WASL Bootcamp Reading Section #1 in class. If you have not finished, just be sure to get through the first 2 readings tonight (we can save the 'Outward Bound" piece for tomorrow)

HW:
-LOTF symbolism project is due tomorrow (project + 3 chunk paragraph)...remember, you can always download a 3 chunk organizer from the writing center of this website...just make sure your final draft is typed, MLA layout, etc.
-Vocab quiz Friday...make sure you have been studying your words!



Creative Writing
-Journals: "Sleeping in"
-Quickly discussed fruit journals and progress on place assignments
-Read Ron Hansen's "Nebraska" and tied it back into the place assignment...if gone, see me for a copy. Discussed the story and Hansen's techniques for making Nebraska more than just the background

HW:
-Tomorrow will mainly be a work day for your place assignments. Bring drafts, starting points, laptops, etc. so you can stay focused and get some work done.
-Place draft due on Wednesday (typed, printed...ready to be edited in class)

-Quick check-in on Animal Farm essays + Odyssey projects
-Discussed Odyssey projects and possibilities
-Went over MLA (again!) and how to set it all up...if you use the new MS Word and are having a hard time, click here for a lovely video tutorial
-Worked on Animal Farm chunks and how to develop sophisticated and insightful commentary

-Animal Farm rewrites are due tomorrow at the start of class...your original (with the graded cover sheet) needs to be stapled to the back

-Discussed yesterday's readings from class...and how they all are from works where the setting is more than just the backdrop, but rather becomes a key part (almost like a character on its own)
-Read a selection from Edward Abbey's Dersert Solitaire (great descriptive writing...entire piece describes one specific place/experience)

-Turned in Odyssey/O'Brother comparison chart

-Began transitioning our toward "setting"...how do specific details fit in
-Read some samples: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Good Rain, Sometimes a Great Notion...all are great examples of powerful description and the setting doing more than just existing in the background

-Discussed last night's reading and the end of the Odyssey
