THE DAILY POST

Welcome to The Daily Post! As the name suggests, this portion of the website is updated daily (right after school) and is designed for you to be able to access what was covered in class, from home. It's a great resource for last minute updates or if you are ever absent or find yourself confused about any specifics about homework, reading, due dates, vocab, etc.

Just consider it one more thing I do to make your life a bit easier...


Tuesday 3/9

LA 10 Honors
-Handed back practice HSPE exams. Discussed the results as well as a few things to keep in mind for next week's actual test. Spent some time discussing this as a class
-Due: Close readings on:"authority" and "leadership." Stamped these and went over the answers as a class. Discussed. Turned-in (both) at the end of the period.
-Discussed chapter 3 (tension, hunting, Simon)

HW:
-Read chapter 4
-Update your symbolism organizer (w/ page numbers!)



Creative Writing
-No Journals today...went straight to the lab
-Due: edited version of your partner's draft. Had this work checked off for points. Swapped back.
-Spent the period working on revising Place Assignments

HW:
-Place Assignments due Thursday by 3pm
-Fruit Journal update by Thursday
-Open Letter #2 next week

Monday 3/8

LA 10 Honors
-CD check on chapter 2
-Discussed chapters 1-2 (first in small groups, then together as a class)
-Created a symbolism organizer that can be used throughout our study of the novel (quotes, pages numbers, CM on what the symbol represents)...your job to keep it up-to-date
-Went through a close reading passage together (on the "toy of voting"). Discussed as a class. Handed out the second passage to be done tonight (if gone, you'll need to get this tomorrow).

HW:
-Read chapter 3
-Finish your 2nd close reading handout( "on authority")



Creative Writing
-Journal starter: "spoiled"
-Due: typed, printed, as-complete-as-possible draft of your place assignment
-Went through an in-class editing exercise/demo (used: PG's "Driving on Rims"). Discussed the editing process together as a class.
-Swapped drafts with a partner (voluntary or random).

HW:
-Need to edit your partner's draft for tomorrow...we will be in the lab (make sure you have an e-copy of your draft to work on)
-Fruitjournal update for Thursday

Friday 3/5

LA 10 Honors
-Took Vocab/Lit Quiz #20
-CD check on chapter 1 of LOTF
-Went over Voc/Lit...added new terms (the last ones!)

HW:
-Read chapter 2 of LOTF. Be prepared for a big, big discussion of what you've read thus far for Monday. Have quotes, have ideas, have questions to share.



Creative Writing
-No Journals today
-Checked in on Place Assignments and Fruit Journals (make sure you are hard at work on both!)
-Went through a drop-in writing activity (spent the period working on a story that began with: he could hear it approaching for miles...then went on to include: broken glass, olives, haziness, train travel, Caracas, a dead bird, a gold tooth, and someone screaming underwater)
-Shared and swapped these at the end of the period

HW:
-Typed, printed, as-complete-as-possible draft of your Place Assignment is due at the start of class on Monday
-Fruit Journals (next check-in is on Thursday morning)

Thursday 3/4

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Eyes Were Watching God, critical paragraph on film
-Quick intro to Lord of the Flies.
-Goldhammer left class for approx. 25min. Students were responsible for handling a "Plane Crash Scenario" on their own.
-Reconvened as a whole group, discussed the experience and it's lack of authority, rules, instruction, etc + how they went for the group.

HW:
-Vocab/Lit Quiz tomorrow
-Read Chapter 1 of Lord of the Flies (click here for an online copy)


Creative Writing

-No Journals today
-Due: Fruit Journal update...should have 2-3 entries by now (these were checked off this morning)
-Went straight to the lab and continued to work on Place Assignments.

HW:
-Place Assignment, complete draft due Monday
-Fruitjournals...keep updating 'em

Wednesday 3/3

LA 10 Honors
-Finished watching Eyes
-
Spent the last 15+ minutes discussing the film, preparing for tonight's paragraph

Creative Writing
-Journals: Did another picture write...Times Square
-Read: Lullaby to Island
-Read: A few student samples of the place assignment

Tuesday 3/2

LA 10 Honors
-Checked in on the movie experience. Reminded everyone about the formal paragraph that goes along with this movie (click here for details)
-Continued watching Eyes
-Stopped a bit early to discuss the film thus far.

HW:
-Eyes Critical Paragraph on the film due at the start of class on Thursday
-Vocab for Friday



Creative Writing
-Journal: used a Galen Rowell photo as a prompt.
-Discussed Fruit Journal progress...looked at some blogs (click here for the blogroll)
-Read: Ron Hansen's "Nebraska" discussed it's strengths + connection to the valley+ connections to your own Place Assignment

HW:
-Evidence of Place Assignment (1-2 pages of notes, opening paragraphs, a rough draft etc.) due at the start of class tomorrow. Be prepared.
-Next Fruit Journal check is Thursday...make sure yours is up-to-date

Monday 2/29

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Eyes essays (by 3pm)
-Due: Eyes essay submitted to turnitin.com (if you need help, click here)
-Explained planned for the next few days (watch Eyes...start Lord of the Flies on Wed)
-Began watching Their Eyes Were Watching God

-Study your vocab
-Make sure your turnitin.com submission is good.

-Quickly Checked in on Essays
-Broke back into Blues Groups...rehearsed for about 15minutes
-Began and finished (except for 2...total!) all blues performances
-Reminded everyone that their edited drafts are due at the start of class tomorrow

-Vocab quiz tomorrow



Creative Writing

-Journals: "Disintegrate"
-Due:25min observational write (did some sharing from these)
-Began discussing place assignments. Discussed the idea of place being more than just a setting and rather a dynamic part of a narrative. As a class, brainstormed examples where this takes place.
-Read some quick, little samples of solid, observational, descriptive writing (TKM, Sometimes a Great Notion, Poisonwood Bible, LOTF, East of Eden)

HW:
-Get fruit, set up blog, email link by Monday
-Begin thinking about possibilities for Place assignment

Wednesday 2/24

LA 10 Honors
-Due: Typed, printed, finished rough draft (checked these off for points)
-Explained the peer editing process (swap with someone, edit, use this guide to help make comments, swap back, have your edited paper for evidence at the start of class on Friday)
-Broke back into blues groups...spent the whole period writing, rehearsing...performances start tomorrow!

HW:
-Peer editing needs to be done for Friday
-Vocab on Friday
-Final drafts of essays due on Monday



Creative Writing
-Journals: "Douglas was screaming..."
-Due: Open Letter #1...discussed this process, etc.
-Introduced the Fruit Journal assignment. Took a look at some samples. Explained: Blogger, Wordpress, and Tumblr.

HW:
-20+min observational write due at the start of class tomorrow
-Fruit + Blog needs to be up and running for Monday. Send an email with a link to your blog.
